Holiday pleasures: The movies and music are stellar this week

It's "I'll be home for Christmas" time in three clubs this week as performers who once called Lincoln home or live here and tour return for the holidays and pick up a gig or two while they're back in town.

The first of those shows takes place Sunday night at Duffy's Tavern, where Gina Lee and her Texas Three will share the stage with the Mezcal Brothers. Actually, Sunday's show will feature just Lee, who bills herself as "the rocking hillbilly gal," and band member Jon Jamison, better known as Sweet Basil McJagger of the Self-Righteous Brothers, backed up by the Mezcals.

That lineup should work just fine for Lee's rockin' country swing approach.

Lee, who left Lincoln in 1995, played with Sam the Butcher and had several collaborations with PawlTisdale, who now drums for Tangelo. She lives in Austin (after a stint in Arizona) and has immersed herself in rockabilly, old-style honky-tonk and western swing. She sure sounds like the real thing on a three-song sampler Sweet Basil sent along this week.

With drummer David Sanger and steel player CindyCashdollar from Asleep at the Wheel and Merle Haggard guitarist Redd Volkaert contributing to the disc, it's obvious she's connected in the Austin country/swing community and knows how to do it right. That show should be fun.
